The BMW 5 Series Touring successfully retains the impressive ride and handling attributes of the saloon. Although it can't quite match the enormous boot you get in a Mercedes E-Class Estate, it’s still a very practical option, with a classy, comfortable and well-equipped interior. The 520i M Sport will make the most financial sense for private buyers, while the 530e PHEV is best suited to company car drivers.
The trim
M Sport trim is the cheapest available, and includes 19in alloy wheels, faux-leather upholstery, climate control, adaptive LED headlights, heated front seats and ambient interior lighting. It's our pick of the range, although we would be tempted to add the optional Comfort Plus Pack.
The engine
While it’s ultimately not short of pace, you do have to rev this entry-level petrol engine quite hard to get the best from it. Fortunately, it sounds quite good when pushed, having a rorty edge. If you’re a private buyer, it’s worth considering, but it doesn’t make much financial sense as a company car.
