The BMW 5 Series Touring successfully retains the impressive ride and handling attributes of the saloon. Although it can't quite match the enormous boot you get in a Mercedes E-Class Estate, it’s still a very practical option, with a classy, comfortable and well-equipped interior. The 520i M Sport will make the most financial sense for private buyers, while the 530e PHEV is best suited to company car drivers.
The trim
M Sport trim is the cheapest available, and includes 19in alloy wheels, faux-leather upholstery, climate control, adaptive LED headlights, heated front seats and ambient interior lighting. It's our pick of the range, although we would be tempted to add the optional Comfort Plus Pack.
The engine
Thanks to an official pure electric range of 63 miles, the 530e plug-in hybrid is the cheapest BMW 5 Series – aside from the fully electric i5 – to run as a company car. And with a combined output of 295bhp from its petrol engine and electric motor, it provides all the performance you’re likely to want.
