Review

The BMW 5 Series Touring is quiet, smooth, classy, comfortable and well equipped. It’s also very practical, although it can't quite match the enormous boot that you get with a Mercedes E-Class Estate.

Trim: M Sport

Hugely popular thanks to its sportier looks – inside and out – and bigger alloy wheels. However, you also get stiffer suspension that does nothing for ride comfort. SE trim is better value and is where our money would go.

Engine: 530i

Decently quick and refined when mooching about town, but needs plenty of revs to get the best from it. We’d avoid this petrol engine and go for the 520d, instead.
