The BMW 7 Series is a fine luxury limo with plenty of tech, performance and opulence. It’s worth considering the fully electric BMW i7 though, because that offers even better refinement and much lower tax bills, as do some plug-in hybrids from rival manufacturers.

Stepping up to M Sport trim from the cheaper Excellence mainly adds sportier looks, including 20in (rather than 19in) alloy wheels. We’d save the money.

It may be the slowest 7 Series, but with an official 0-62mph time of 4.8sec, the 750e xDrive is still capable of outprinting most hot hatches. It combines a 308bhp 3.0-litre petrol engine with a 194bhp electric motor, and can officially cover up to 49 miles on pure battery power.
