The BMW X1 is good to drive, classy inside and hugely practical. It isn't as quiet or comfortable as the best family SUVs, but it's a fine buy if you fancy something a little more sporty.

This range-topping trim comes with 18in alloy wheels, leather seats, an aggressive bodykit, stiffer suspension and heated front sports seats. It's too pricey to recommend and you have to suffer a bumpy ride, though.
