Review

The X3 offers a superb driving experience with a deeply impressive lineup of engines, as well as a spacious and high-quality interior. That all adds up to make it one of the very best large SUVs to buy, but it’s still worth checking out the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 as highly capable alternatives.

Entry-level trim is packed with kit, including luxuries including LED headlights, automatic lights and wipers, interior ambient lighting, 18in alloy wheels, three-zone climate control, a powered tailgate, cruise control and heated leather seats and an 8.8in infotainment screen with sat-nav Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Apart from adding adjustable lumbar support to the front seats, there’s no need to spend any more.

This plug-in hybrid is significantly quicker than the 20i. BMW says it will deliver around 30 miles of pure electric power from a full charge – but expect more like 15-20 miles in real-world driving conditions. The pace and range is almost identical to that of its main plug-in hybrid rival, the Audi Q5 TFSI e, and low company car tax is a major benefit. It's ultra quiet in electric mode, and even when the engine fires up its very peaceful. It'll also prove super economical to run if you can keep the battery topped up, but expect the MPG to be no better than the mid-30's when running on the petrol engine alone.
