The X3 offers a superb driving experience with a deeply impressive lineup of engines, as well as a spacious and high-quality interior. That all adds up to make it one of the very best large SUVs to buy, but it’s still worth checking out the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 as highly capable alternatives.

Also adds 19in wheels over the SE plus a more aggressive-looking bodykit and a stiffer sports suspension, as well as an upgraded infotainment system and digital instrument dials. SE trim makes more sense, though.

The engine

Petrol power starts with this 2.0-litre 184bhp engine, which we’re yet to try. On paper it offers similar outright pace to the Land Rover Discovery Sport P200, but is slower than the Q5 45 TFSI.
