All BMW X5s are smooth, classy and luxurious SUVs. It's not quite as practical as the most spacious rivals out there but it's good enough where it counts, and where it really impresses is the quality of its lavish interior and superb infotainment system. Opt for the xDrive45e, and you are buying one of the most impressive plug-in hybrids around, combining many of the best points of the standard X5 with a substantial real-world electric range and low company car tax.

This version of the X5 gets bigger brakes and sporty looks, with more aggressive bumpers and 20in alloys on the outside, along with illuminated door kick panels and M Sport pedals and steering wheel on the inside. It's a popular choice that should make it easier to sell and have better resale values, which is why it's our pick.

This is a 282bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel that offers strong acceleration with 0-62mph in 6.1sec, tonnes of low-down punch for towing and, like all X5s, a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic gearbox, which, in this case, makes it more responsive at times than the equivalent Audi Q7 45 TDI. It sounds throaty and should also average around 40mpg according to official figures.
