All BMW X5s are smooth, classy and luxurious SUVs. It's not quite as practical as the most spacious rivals out there but it's good enough where it counts, and where it really impresses is the quality of its lavish interior and superb infotainment system. Opt for the xDrive45e, and you are buying one of the most impressive plug-in hybrids around, combining many of the best points of the standard X5 with a substantial real-world electric range and low company car tax.

This is the cheapest X5, but it’s still pretty lavish, with 19in alloy wheels, leather seats, heated and electric front seats, a powered tailgate, power-folding door mirrors, air suspension, ambient lighting, LED headlights and an infotainment system bristling with features – such as a 12.3in touchscreen, sat-nav, wifi hotspot and smartphone mirroring – all coming as standard. You really don’t need anything more unless you fancy the sportier styling that M Sport brings.

Our pick of the range combines a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine with a big battery and powerful electric motor to deliver incredibly swift performance – in our testing we managed 0-60mph in a rapid 5.1sec. Even on electric power alone it's punchy enough to keep up easily with rush hour traffic, and it’ll do an official 54 miles on a charge – as measured under the WLTP test cycle. That’s a staggering figure, considering rivals, such as the plug-in hybrid versions of the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC90, manage only around half that. On our real-world test route we managed 32.5 miles on a single charge, which wasn't bad at all, and it offers fantastically low company car tax.
