Review

For the money the Citroën Berlingo offers unrivalled interior space, and a relaxing ride. It's also better-trimmed inside then the Vauxhall Combo Life and slightly nicer to drive than a Peugeot Rifter — cars that are otherwise identical. If you're after something more car-like to drive or plusher, then it's worth looking at the pricier Volkswagen Touran, though.

Flair adds 16in alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, electric rear windows, driver's adjustable lumbar support, rear picnic tables, voice recognition, eCall, sat-nav and an electronic parking brake – worth considering but we'd stick with the cheaper Feel model for the best value.

This 128bhp engine is our pick of the diesels. It is remarkably smooth and refined for a diesel engine, and has lots of useful low-down grunt that’ll be great for those who regularly carry large loads or lots of people – especially useful if you opt for the seven-seat model. It also offers great fuel economy if you do lots of motorway miles. It's available with a slick, eight-speed automatic gearbox, which feels like a perfect fit with this engine.
