Huge performance and impressive practicality for a reasonable price, but the Ford Puma ST will deliver even bigger thrills for significantly less money. And, if you’re after a sports SUV with an upmarket interior and a cosseting ride, then we’d take a Cupra Formentor.

The entry-level VZ1 trim is so well equipped that there isn’t much VZ2 can bring to the table. As such, it won’t cost you all that much more to upgrade but it only adds heated and leather front bucket seats, an electric tailgate and the Safety and Driving Pack.

The 2.0-litre turbo engine is essentially the same as you’ll find in Volkswagen's flagship Golf R hot hatch, so there’s more than enough firepower to get your blood pumping – 296bhp to be exact. In our tests it slingshot the Cupra Ateca from 0-60mph in just 4.7sec, while the top speed is 152mph 153mph – numbers which are comparable to the BMW X2 M35i, Volkswagen T-Roc R and Cupra Formentor.
