Review

The Cupra Formentor is slightly more expensive and a bit less practical than the Seat Ateca on which it's based. However, in exchange, it offers sharp coupé SUV looks and a smarter interior. It'll still seat four tall adults ably and has a decent boot, so it's not impractical, it handles well and, if you stick with our favourite 1.5 TSI V1 version, it's hardly expensive and yet very well equipped.

Step up from V1 to V2 trim, and the wheels grow from 18in to 19in, while other additional kit includes front parking sensors, a rear-view camera, nappa leather upholstery and front sports seats that are electrically operated and heated.

This entry-level engine still has plenty of low-down muscle and enough power (148bhp) for reasonably swift progress and 0-62mph in 8.9sec. Given its affordable purchase price and running costs, with an official average of around 45mpg, it's our pick of the range.
