The equipment might seem generous, but the Materia is still pricey compared with its rivals. Average fuel economy of 39.2mpg helps to make up for this, but the group 17 insurance rating will make it more costly to cover than similar cars, while carbon dioxide emissions of 169g/km (176g/km for the auto) are unimpressive, too. Daihatsu's normally poor resale values won't be helped by the Materia's unusual looks, either.
Daihatsu Materia Hatchback quality & reliability
The plastics feel hard and cheap, but most edges are well finished and everything seems solidly put together. Daihatsus have a reputation for being solidly built, so we expect the Materia to stand up well to everyday use.
Daihatsu Materia Hatchback safety & security
Anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution are fitted as standard, but there are only twin front and side airbags, and no curtain airbags. There's no stability control, either. However, the rear seat carries two ISOFIX child seat mountings, and central locking and an engine immobiliser are also fitted.
