The DS 4’s sculpted interior helps give it a real premium feel, making it a good – if pricey – alternative to the usual family SUVs. However, the disappointing gearbox, so-so performance and poor rear space mean that it still can’t quite stand up to a lot of its rivals, including the Audi Q3 and Cupra Formentor.

Rivoli builds on Trocadero trim and gives you a leather interior, matrix LED headlights, semi-autonomous driving, adaptive cruise control, rear-cross traffic alert and dark tinted windows. Considering the additional equipment that you get, though, we feel that Rivoli is too expensive to recommend.

We've yet to try the 129bhp 1.2-litre PureTech 130 engine. As with all other versions, it comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox which is impressively smooth as it switches through the gears.
