The DS 4’s sculpted interior helps give it a real premium feel, making it a good – if pricey –alternative to the usual family car suspects. However, a disappointing ride and handling balance, together with so-so performance means that it can’t quite stand up to the likes of the Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series.

The Performance Line trim makes the appearance of the DS4 a little more sporty, with 19in alloy wheels and black window surrounds and DS badges. You also get a Alcantara suede and leather interior, front parking sensors, a rear-view camera and a pressed carbon fibre insert on the steering wheel that is unique to each car. Like the entry-level Bastille + trim, you don’t get built-in sat nav, head-up display or the additional small touchscreen.

We’ve yet to try the only diesel engine in the DS4 range, the 1.5 BlueHDi.
