The DS 4’s sculpted interior helps give it a real premium feel, making it a good – if pricey – alternative to the usual family SUVs. However, the disappointing gearbox, so-so performance and poor rear space mean that it still can’t quite stand up to a lot of its rivals, including the Audi Q3 and Cupra Formentor.

Cross Rivoli builds on the Cross Trocadero trim by adding a black leather interior, matrix LED headlights, semi-autonomous driving, adaptive cruise control, rear cross traffic alert and dark tinted rear windows.

We’ve yet to try the 178bhp 1.6-litre PureTech 180 engine but expect it to offer sufficient performance for most situations. As with all the other engine choices, the PureTech 180 comes with an eight-speed automatic which is impressively smooth as it switches through the gears.
