People talk about things like “charm” and “character” when discussing the Fiat Panda, but the cold, hard facts that we measure cars by prove it to be a terrible choice. It's below-par to drive and isn’t very practical, but by far the worst thing about it is its utterly abysmal Euro NCAP safety rating. Please avoid the Panda at all costs.

Mild hybrid means mild; little more than a faint whiff, even. You can’t plug it in and it can’t travel on electric power alone, which a Toyota Yaris Hybrid will if you’re pottering in traffic. The Panda’s 69bhp naturally aspirated 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine is aided by a tiny electric motor and a minuscule lithium-ion battery that, in theory, boosts acceleration. However, you wouldn't know it from driving the Panda. You really have to work the gears hard to make any meaningful progress and, even then, 0-62mph takes a tardy 13.8sec. The official average economy of around 50mpg is good but not spectacular.
