Superb to drive, smart inside and well equipped, plus it offers a broad range of trim levels – from the affordable Trend to the SUV-inspired Active – to cater for many tastes and budgets. It’s one of the very best small cars you can buy, but it can prove quite pricey in higher trims and the Volkswagen Polo just has the edge for ride comfort, safety and rear-seat space.

Our chosen trim comes with all the standard kit of the entry-level Trend trim but adds some extra comforts, including an automatic dipping rearview mirror, rear parking sensors, built-in sat-nav, keyless start, traffic-sign recognition, automatic LED headlights and rear privacy glass. It also allows you to add the optional automatic emergency braking, something we consider to be an essential safety feature.

If you can afford to spend the extra, this range-topping mild-hybrid engine is well worth your consideration. As the most powerful engine in the standard Fiesta range (excluding the 1.5 Ecoboost in the ST hot hatch) it’s sufficiently potent, pulling hard from low revs and making overtaking easy. The mild-hybrid technology means that it remains efficient and gives an extra power boost from a standstill.
