Superb to drive, smart inside and well equipped, plus it offers a broad range of trim levels – from the affordable Trend to the SUV-inspired Active – to cater for many tastes and budgets. It’s one of the very best small cars you can buy, but it can prove quite pricey in higher trims and the Volkswagen Polo just has the edge for ride comfort, safety and rear-seat space.

Our chosen trim comes with all the standard kit of the entry-level Trend trim but adds some extra comforts, including an automatic dipping rearview mirror, rear parking sensors, built-in sat-nav, keyless start, traffic-sign recognition, automatic LED headlights and rear privacy glass. It also allows you to add the optional automatic emergency braking, something we consider to be an essential safety feature.

The mid-range 99bhp engine is a fine engine, pulling hard from low-revs and sprinting from 0-62mph over a second faster than the 74bhp entry-level engine. Even better, it manages decent levels of economy, helping to keep running costs low. All that makes the 1.0L Ecoboost 100 our pick of the Fiesta engine range.
