The Ford Fiesta is superb to drive, smart inside and well equipped. It’s one of the very best small cars, but the rival Volkswagen Polo is an even better all-rounder.

Trim: Active X

Active X is the range-topping Active model and gets a part-leather interior with heated front seats, electrically folding door mirrors with puddle lights, sat-nav, a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors. It’s packed with kit, but it’s pricey.

Engine: 1.5 TDCi

Diesel engines rarely make sense in cars this small. The entry-level option is a fine effort, offering good low-end pull and decent fuel economy, but unless you do a serious amount of miles we'd suggest you look at one of the 1.0 Ecoboost petrols instead.
