The Ford Focus stands out as one of the best driver’s cars in the class, with truly entertaining handling if you go for our favourite ST-Line Edition trim. Its sharp dynamics are complemented by the decent ride, quiet cruising manners and lots of passenger space. The iffy interior quality and slightly lacklustre performance are the main areas that mark it down.

Zetec trim is the entry point and comes very well kitted out. That includes an 8.0in infotainment system with wireless phone charging, sat-nav, a DAB radio, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto. You also get front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights for dipped beams, driver's seat lumbar adjustment, 16in alloy wheels, power-folding door mirrors, air-con, cruise control, auto lights and a heated windscreen. It's well worth considering, but ST-Line Edition is our favourite.

It isn’t frisky enough to fry your adrenal glands (0-62mph comes along in 10.0sec) and the Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI 130 is punchier, but it has decent shove once the revs build past 2000rpm. This mild hybrid has a small electric motor to add a bit of extra oomph at low revs but mainly it makes it more efficient (officially it'll average over 56mpg and emit 114g/km of CO2) than the regular 1.0L Ecoboost 125, which is why it's our pick of the range.
