Everyday costs, plus how reliable and safe it is

The Ka+ looks cheap on the surface, undercutting small car rivals such as the Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia, but it’s still more expensive than the Dacia Sandero.

The 84bhp 1.2 engine emits 114g/km of CO2 and has claimed fuel economy of 56.5mpg. The 69bhp version of that engine is worse on both counts, at 117g/km and 55.4mpg. The diesel unit is the most economical, with a CO2 output of 99g/km and a claimed 76.3mpg, but it costs more to buy than the petrol models, so the 84bhp 1.2 petrol remains the best in the line-up.

Studio models get electric front windows and an alarm as standard. Zetec adds alloy wheels, air-con, cruise control and a leather steering wheel. Top-spec Active trim adds a raised ride height, roof rails and some mild off-road styling kit. Options include heated seats and a heated windscreen, as well as rear parking sensors.

The Ka+ only scored three stars in its safety assessment by Euro NCAP. The Ibiza and Fabia both managed the full five stars, while even the Sandero achieved four. You can’t get automatic emergency braking, not even as an option, on the Ka+.

Verdict

The Ford Ka+ is decent to drive and has room for four adults, but the Dacia Sandero is a better budget buy
