The Kuga is a decent large SUV in any guise but really makes sense if you opt for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. It's one of the best plug-in hybrid large SUVs there is, providing a decent electric-only range, good fuel economy, tidy enough handling, and all for a sensible price. The luxury-themed, top-spec Vignale is lavishly equipped, with a head-up display, 19in alloy wheels, heated steering wheel, hands-free boot opening, active noise cancellation, a 12.3in digital instrument display and automatic parking assistance. There are also electrically adjustable and heated front seats, trimmed in full leather that extends to the dashboard. It's very pricey, though, compared to other large SUVs that have more to offer.

Mild-hybrid tech helps this 2.0-litre 148bhp diesel engine to emit less CO2 than the less powerful 1.5-litre. Performance is similar to the Ecoboost 150, in other words it's adequate, but you can’t have an automatic gearbox. It can at least tow up to 1900kg, 100kg more than the Ecoboost 150.
