The Kuga is a decent large SUV in any guise but really makes sense if you opt for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. It's one of the best plug-in hybrid large SUVs there is, providing a decent electric-only range, good fuel economy, tidy enough handling, and all for a sensible price. The entry-level Kuga trim is Zetec. Standard equipment includes an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system, sat-nav, a DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a wireless smartphone charging pad, front and rear parking sensors, sports seats with adjustable lumbar support, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear lever, cruise control, automatic lights, 17in alloy wheels, air conditioning, privacy glass, power-folding door mirrors and a heated windscreen, as well as sliding and reclining rear seats. This looks to be a good trim if you're looking to keep costs down with one of the cheaper engine variants.

Mild-hybrid tech helps this 2.0-litre 148bhp diesel engine to emit less CO2 than the less powerful 1.5-litre. Performance is similar to the Ecoboost 150, in other words it's adequate, but you can’t have an automatic gearbox. It can at least tow up to 1900kg, 100kg more than the Ecoboost 150.
