Review

So far we've only tried one engine and trim – the 2.5 Duratec PHEV ST Line – and it's one of the best plug-in-hybrid large SUVs there is. Interior quality could be better and the battery reduces boot space, but it's well priced, good to drive and has an impressive electric only range.

Trim: Vignale

The luxury-themed, top-spec Vignale is lavishly equipped, with a head-up display, heated steering wheel, hands-free boot opening and automatic parking assistance. There’s also electrically adjustable and heated front seats in full leather, and a 12.3in digital instrument display. It's very pricey, though, compared to other large SUVs that have more to offer.

Engine: 2.5 EcoBoost PHEV

The plug-in hybrid model pairs a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor. You can drive in full-electric mode, full petrol mode, or a mix between the two as the car sees fit. Electric mode gives instant punch, while in the hybrid setting, the change between petrol and electric is almost seamless, and you’ll only really notice the engine has kicked in when you hear it start to murmur away, which it will do up inclines and when overtaking because of the CVT gearbox. A good official electric-only range of 35 miles help keep company car tax low.
