With its nippy acceleration and agile handling, the Ford Puma will put a bigger smile on your face than any other small SUV. It’s a car you can buy with your sensible hat on, too, thanks to its excellent real-world fuel economy, cleverly designed boot and attractive PCP costs. The Puma misses out on a fifth star in this highly competitive class because a few rivals are slightly more well rounded. Our favourite version is the Ecoboost 125 in ST Line trim.
The trim
17in alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers, rear parking sensors, climate control and cruise control all come as standard on Titanium trim. It's well worth consider, although you get more comfortable, supportive seats in ST-Line models.
The engine
With 124bhp, the Ecoboost mHEV 125 can accelerate from 0-60mph in 9.5sec – far quicker than the Nissan Juke or the Volkswagen T-Roc 1.0 TSI. It comes with a super-slick, six-speed manual gearbox as standard, or you have a smooth seven-speed automatic gearbox for a premium. Regardless of the gearbox, this engine pulls reasonably well from low revs, although the more powerful 1.0 Ecoboost mHEV 155 version is much faster.
