Now with a five-seat, hybrid engine-only line-up, the Honda CR-V remains a very recommendable car. It's really economical, very roomy for passengers and luggage, comfortable and decent to drive. Reliability is also a strong point, but make sure you get a good discount to bring the price down.

Starts to push the price up too much for our full vote, but does add things worth having, such as heated front seats, leather seats, ambient lighting, front passenger lumbar and height adjustment, keyless entry and more safety kit, including blind spot monitoring.

The 2.0 i-MMD Hybrid is the pick of the range. It's really lively, with instant reactions when you put your foot down from its standard CVT automatic gearbox and plenty of poke to get you up to 70mph without any drama. It clocked 0-60mph in 8.0sec when we tested it, which on the day just shaded the Kia Sorento Hybrid and trounced the Land Rover Discovery Sport P200. The CVT gearbox is smooth but sends the engine revs soaring at times, but when the CR-V is running in town in electric mode it's quiet. Can only tow 750kg, though.
