The Honda HR-V is an efficient and well equipped family SUV with a smartly styled and nicely finished interior. However, this is a highly competitive class, and for the same money there are plenty of rivals that are better to drive and more practical.

As well equipped as entry-level Elegance models are, we reckon it's worth upgrading to mid-range Advance trim, because this brings a powered tailgate, leather upholstery and a heated steering wheel.

All HR-Vs combine a 1.5-litre petrol engine with two electric motors for a total of 129bhp. This makes for good fuel economy (expect to see high-40s) and a very quiet car in stop-start traffic. However, when you accelerate the petrol engine immediately starts revving very noisily, almost as though you’re stuck in first gear.
