The Hyundai Bayon doesn’t offer the high-up driving position of many small SUVs, which is likely to put some buyers off. It’s comfortable, well equipped and roomy in the back, though

Go for entry-level SE Connect trim and you get 16in alloys, air-conditioning, cruise control, dusk-sensing headlights, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and a 8.0in touschscreen infotainment. The big omission is rain-sensing windscreen wipers.

We haven’t tried this entry-level engine in the Bayon, although a 0-62mph time of 10.7 seconds suggests it’ll be up to the job. Comes with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, although you can have an automatic if you prefer.
