The Hyundai i30 is worth considering if you value practicality and ease of ownership above driving enjoyment or the lowest running costs. The i30 is pretty comfy over bumps and its engines are refined, but rivals such as the Ford Focus add extra driver appeal to the mix.

Trim: SE Nav

SE Nav adds an integrated sat-nav and takes the screen size to 8.0in, as well as bringing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. We don’t see the need to spend any more money than this.

Engine: 1.0T GDI

Our favourite engine in the range is Hyundai’s turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol. It’s a decently flexible engine and feels at home in town and on the motorway. It’s so good, in fact, that the more expensive turbocharged 1.4 petrol feels a little redundant.
