The 64kWh version of the Hyundai Kona Electric has a fantastic real-world range between charges, plus it’s quick and well-equipped. However, excellent rivals including the Kia e-Niro and Volkswagen ID.3 are better all-rounders thanks to their superior ride comfort and more practical interiors.

Stick to entry-level SE Connect trim because, as well as keeping the price down, you relatively small alloy wheels to stop the ride from becoming too uncomfortable. You also get air-conditioning (climate control with the Hybrid), dusk-sensing headlights and cruise control, as well rear parking sensors and an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system.

The cheapest way into a Kona doesn't get you blistering performance. Acceleration stops short of being frustratingly sluggish, but 0-62mph in 11.9sec isn't great for a modern small SUV.
