If interior space is high on your list of priorities you should definitely take a look at the Hyundai Tucson. Four tall adults will have plenty of room and the boot is cavernous. Interior quality impresses, as it should given the Tucson’s relatively high asking price. However, there are more comfortable and better handling SUVs out there, while premium rivals such as the Range Rover Evoque feel even more special inside.

A full hybrid with a battery big enough for short bursts of leisurely electric driving in stop-start traffic, but not the true electric range of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). With the petrol engine and electric motor combined it’s no slouch away from the lights and there’s plenty of useful pep for overtaking (0-62mph takes 8.0sec), although there’s a small fly in the ointment: the six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox is hesitant, taking a moment to kick down.
