The Hyundai Tucson is well worth considering if interior space is high on your list of priorities. Four tall adults will have plenty of room inside, the boot is cavernous and interior quality is impressive, although some rivals offers a more comfortable ride and better handling. The entry-level petrol engine is the best choice for private buyers, while the PHEV is the smart choice as a company car.

A full hybrid with a battery big enough for short bursts of leisurely electric driving in stop-start traffic, but not the true electric range of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). With the petrol engine and electric motor combined it’s no slouch away from the lights and there’s plenty of useful pep for overtaking (0-62mph takes 8.0sec), although there’s a small fly in the ointment: the six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox is hesitant, taking a moment to kick down.
