Even with its smart interior, generous kit list and long warranty, the Jaecoo 7 is best avoided. Its driving experience is poor, with its fidgety ride, wayward handling and over-sensitive safety systems meaning moments of peace are all too rare. If you do buy one, the PHEV version makes the most sense – it’s well priced and potentially very efficient.
The engine
The 1.5T PHEV is a plug-in hybrid, so it combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 201bhp with 0-62mph taking 8.5 seconds. An 18.3kWh battery powers the electric motor to deliver an official electric-only range of 57 miles.
