The Jaguar F-Pace balances fantastic driving dynamics, a generous amount of standard kit and a smart interior. However, there are other SUVs out there that are more spacious, slightly more refined and ride more comfortably. We’d stick to the entry-level version as a private buy, while those wanting a plug-in hybrid should consider the Mercedes GLC instead.

R-Dynamic SE Black gets you bigger wheels, additional safety kit with blind-spot assistance and an upgraded sound system.

This 296bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel is a cracker. It's smooth and punchy at low revs, making it ideal for towing with, and flat out it'll hit 0-62mph in just 6.4sec. On top of that, it's quite economical relative to the performance on offer thanks to mild hybrid assistance – officially it averages just under 40mpg.
