The Jeep Compass has impressive off-road credentials, but its poor road manners, noisy engines, uninspiring interior and steep price mean it's ultimately off the pace compared with its major family SUV rivals.

Adaptive cruise control, auto high beams and wireless phone-charging are all added to Limited over and above Night Eagle.

The plug-in hybrid 4xe model and its 0-62mph time of 7.3sec seems good on paper, but it never feels quick. It’s fine running on electric around town, but the engine is raucous when you try to get up to motorway speeds.
