The Land Rover Defender is a rugged SUV that fuses fantastic off-road ability with decent on-road manners. If that's the blend of abilities you're after, it's effectively in a class of one. It's available in three body styles so you can have anything from five to eight seats. We think the 110 model in seven-seat form makes the most sense for larger families.

X-Dynamic SE trim comes very well equipped, getting luxuries that include 20in alloy wheels, privacy glass, 12-way electronically adjustable seats with memory function, heating and cooling, cruise control, a heated steering wheel, air-conditioning, an 11.4in touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, DAB radio and Bluetooth, blind-spot monitoring, trailer stability assist and an assisted tailgate.

The P300 is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol with 296bhp, which is certainly plenty of power and enough for 0-62mph in as little as 7.1sec. It still needs to be revved pretty hard if you want to make swift progress, though, and then you'll struggle to get anywhere near its official average of around 24mpg.
