The Land Rover Defender is a rugged SUV that fuses fantastic off-road ability with decent on-road manners. If that's the blend of abilities you're after, it's effectively in a class of one. There is also, handily, a version for everyone, with three body styles so you can have anything from five to eight seats.

This entry-level version still comes with loads of equipment, including 20in dark-coloured alloy wheels, satin finish grey detailing, black recovery hoops, privacy glass, a heated steering wheel, 12-way electronically adjustable seats with memory and heating, cruise control, air-conditioning, an 11.4in touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, DAB radio and Bluetooth, blind-spot monitoring, trailer stability assist and an assisted tailgate.
The engineSee full engine specs
The P400e uses a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an electric motor that, combined, produce 399bhp. That's good enough for 0-62mph in 5.6sec or an electric-only range of up to 27 miles. It's by far the cheapest Defender on company car tax (and the only one not in the top BIK tax band) but it tows the least – up to 3000kg.
