The Land Rover Defender is a rugged SUV that fuses fantastic off-road ability with decent on-road manners. If that's the blend of abilities you're after, it's effectively in a class of one. There is also, handily, a version for everyone, with three body styles so you can have anything from five to eight seats.

SE is our favourite trim as it gives you plenty of luxuries at a palatable price such as 20in wheels, the Clear Sight rear-view mirror (see the visibility section), an electric steering column, 12-way electric front seats with memory, a Meridian sound system with a subwoofer, 10 speakers and 400 watts, keyless entry, front fog lights and Premium LED headlights with signature day-time running lights (the latter aping the look of the original Defender’s round lights). Blind-spot monitoring and a system to alert you of vehicles about to cross your path when reversing are also bundled in, and it has Isofix mounts on the front passenger seat.

This straight-six diesel has 296bhp and more than enough low-down pull for effortless in-gear acceleration (on or off-road). It'll do 0-62mph in as little as 6.7sec, depending on whether you go for the 90 or the 110. It's also pretty smooth and quiet, and comes with an excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox. The downsides are 25-30mpg in the real world and the top-rate company car tax band.
