The Land Rover Discovery Sport, especially in seven-seat form, is far more practical and family-friendly than rivals such as the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, which is why it's one of our favourite large SUVs. Those German alternatives are ultimately more comfortable, nimbler and fuel-efficient, though, while you can get even more space for less with the excellent Peugeot 5008.

This is the replacement for our old favourite D180 diesel engine and now comes with mild hybrid technology to improve emissions. It’s impressively refined and provides a useful amount of additional power over the lesser D165 to make it our overall pick of the range for private buyers.
