The Land Rover Range Rover Velar is a stylish, refined and seriously appealing large SUV. If you keep to small wheels, it's a comfy companion while our favoured S trim gets plenty of kit. It’s best to stick to the cheaper trims and engines – once you start moving up the range, the price rises into the realms of better-resolved cars, such as the Audi Q8 and BMW X6.

R-Dynamic HSE has extra niceties like Windsor leather, an electrically adjustable steering wheel, upgraded sound system and the 20-way heated and cooled electric front seats.

This entry-level engine is the pick of the lineup because it's the best value. The four-cylinder diesel is impressively hushed and smooth, plus performance is more than adequate for long motorway journeys. If performance is your main concern then the D300 is the better choice, but it's also a lot more money.
