This 181bhp mild hybrid petrol engine uses electric boost for extra power and efficiency, but it’s surprisingly noisy, doesn’t feel as fast as its power and performance figures suggest and isn’t as efficient as equivalent units in its competitors. Four-wheel drive is optional.

This 191bhp diesel engine is our favourite in the range. It delivers its best performance low down, right where you need it, yet also returns impressive fuel economy. True, it’s quite noisy when it’s pushed hard, but it settles down when you’re cruising along. Four-wheel drive is optional.

A softer, less focused alternative to the riotous C63 models, but this 385bhp turbocharged V6 is far from a slouch. It sounds fantastic when you rev is hard, too, but is unsurprisingly pretty thirsty. 

C43 4Matic Night Ed Premium Plus

This 503bhp V8 S model is the one to go for. After all, you get bigger brakes and an electronic differential to go with the added power, which adds up to one of the most entertaining performance models on sale. 

C63 S Final Edition

The S package is not just about straight-line speed. You’re also treated to an electronic limited-slip differential that makes the car less snappy and more predictable at the limit, larger brake discs that are less prone to overheating, beautiful 19in alloy wheels and supremely supportive, AMG performance front seats. Factor in competitive dealer discounts and the S version begins to look comparatively much better value for money, and would be our choice.


AMG S

Starting with the ‘baby’ V8 model, you get distinctive 18in alloy wheels, aggressive AMG styling, a limited-slip differential, adaptive LED headlights, a 12.3in digital instrument cluster, nappa leather heated sports seats, Comand infotainment with a 10.25in touchscreen and sat-nav, a nine-speaker stereo, electrically operated memory front seats and wireless charging.

Mercedes’ line-up is vast – ranging from the A-Class family hatchback through to staple saloons such as the C-Class and E-Class, and onwards towards multiple SUVs, luxury saloons and even sports cars. Coupés and convertibles are thrown into the mix as well.
