The Mercedes C-Class Estate isn't the most practical estate car or the most fun to drive, but it impresses in other areas, such as ride comfort. The C300e plug-in hybrid will be tempting – especially to company car drivers – thanks to its long electric-only range.

This trim level gets a 12.3in digital driver display and an 11.9in touchscreen running the latest MBUX infotainment system with wireless smartphone integration and a reversing camera. You also get LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring, leather trim and heated front seats.

This 197bhp engine is our pick of the diesel range because it delivers plenty of performance from low revs, and returns some of the best fuel economy figures for the class. It's not as refined as the equivalent engine in an Audi A4, but settles down when you’re just cruising along.
