Many rivals outshine the Mercedes C-Class in terms of interior quality, but the C300e plug-in hybrid version offers a huge electric range and makes a cheap company car, plus all versions come with lots of tech, and the adaptive suspension strikes a fine balance between ride comfort and cornering composure.

Similar to AMG line, but does without the sportier exterior and interior styling of the latter. You’ll get both a 12.3in digital driver display and an 11.9in portrait-oriented central touchscreen with the latest MBUX infotainment system that includes wireless smartphone integration and a reversing camera. There’s also LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring, leather trim and heated front seats.

This 197bhp engine is our pick of the diesel range because it delivers plenty of performance from low revs, and returns some of the best fuel economy figures for the class. It's not as refined as the equivalent engine in an Audi A4, but it settles down when you’re just cruising along.
