Despite having four doors, you still trade practicality for style, but otherwise the Mercedes CLS offers great pace and tidy handling

Trim: AMG Line

Comes with plenty of luxury gizmos, including adaptive LED headlights, leather seats, part-electric front seats with lumbar adjustment and heating, climate control, parking sensors front and rear, a rear-view camera and power-folding door mirrors. Infotainment wise, you get sat-nav, a DAB radio and Bluetooth, all operated via the 12.3in central screen, with another 12.3in screen adjacent to it in place of analogue instruments. Safety aids include automatic emergency braking and lane assist, with blindspot monitoring an option.

Engine: CLS 350d 4Matic

The 282bhp 2.9-litre diesel is very quiet at a cruise, but has as much pulling power as anyone would ever need – and then some. It’s not quite the 400d model, but it’s cheaper and slightly more frugal, so it’s our pick of the range.
