The model
Read full reviewThe Mercedes E-Class is a mixed bag. It's very well equipped and has a great range of engines, from efficient diesels, plug-in hybrids to punchy petrols. It's pretty quiet and comfortable on the motorway but the ride isn't perfect around town and, while the boot is big, the rear passenger compartment isn't, relative to its rivals. Overall, we'd say the BMW 5 Series is a better car to drive, has a better infotainment system and it's better built inside.

The engine
See full engine specsThis 191bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine has the lowest CO2 emissions of any non-plug-in E Class and it's RDE2 compliant. It comes with a nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard and is a surprisingly strong and flexible performer, with a 0-62mph time of 7.3sec. It's reasonably quiet and should average 45mpg if you drive it respectfully. It's our pick of the range.
