Review

The Mercedes E-Class is very well equipped and available with a great range of engines, from efficient diesels, to tax-friendly plug-in hybrids and punchy petrols. It's pretty quiet and comfortable on the motorway, too, but the ride could be better around town and, while the boot is big, the rear passenger compartment isn't, relative to its rivals. Overall, the BMW 5 Series is a better car to drive, has a better infotainment system and is better built inside.

We'd stop at the AMG Line Premium, which adds a 360-degree parking camera, keyless entry, a powered boot lid, 19in alloy wheel and augmented navigation. However, this AMG Line Night Edition Premium Plus adds a panoramic sunroof, 20in alloy wheels, fully electric front seats with memory settings, an electric steering column and a Burmester stereo with 13 speakers and 590 watts.

This 326bhp 2.9-litre straight-six diesel engine is a real treat. It sounds great and fires you along on a wave of torque that makes it effortlessly quick. When you give it some beans, it hits 0-62mph in 4.9sec. Officially it averages more than 40mpg.
