As premium SUVs go, the GLC isn’t the best all-rounder – regular versions lag behind rivals, particularly on practicality and driving dynamics. But good engines and a pleasant interior still make it worth considering. Meanwhile, if pace is everything to you (and running costs aren’t) then certainly look at the exceptionally quick AMG-powered options.

Comes with everything that’s standard on the entry-level SE, plus rear parking sensors, larger alloys, heated front seats and LED headlights. You also get sat-nav, so it’s worth the price premium. However, we think range-topping AMG Line trim makes even more sense.,

The lower-powered version of the four-cylinder 2.1-litre diesel engine (badged 220 d) is fast enough to satisfy the desires of most SUV buyers. The 250 d model is noticeably stronger at low and mid revs, however, which allows the standard nine-speed automatic gearbox to keep the engine revs low and whisk you up to speed in a more relaxed fashion. It’s worth the relatively small premium.
