The model
Read full reviewThe MG HS is competitively priced but don't think of it as just a budget family SUV. It's a five-star car on merit if you opt for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. Both hybrids are good to drive, relatively affordable to run, and plug-in hybrid adds a really long electric range, even compared with some pricier PHEVs. On top of that, the HS's interior is roomy, doesn't feel budget-grade at all, comes really well equipped and includes lots of safety kit, too. Our pick of the range is the HS Plug-in Hybrid in entry-level SE trim, which has all the essentials and more. Just be aware that 1.5 petrol non-hybrid versions aren't as good to drive, though.
The trim
See full equipmentWhile SE trim gives you everything that you need, top-spec Trophy is worth your attention. It adds heated front seats with adjustable lumbar support and a memory function, dual-zone air conditioning, wireless phone-charging and a powered tailgate.
The engine
See full engine specsWith 167bhp, the 1.5T petrol engine has more than enough oomph for everyday driving, but doesn’t pick up quite as quickly as some of its rivals. You can have it with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic one, both of which are passable but not as good as in rivals.
