The Mini Convertible isn’t as rewarding to drive as its hatchback sibling, but its open-air exuberance makes up for that. You also get a terrific interior and sensible running costs, while strong residuals mean you can buy with your head as well as your heart.

This entry-level trim is probably all that you’ll ever need, because it comes with plenty of standard equipment (a lot of which used to be optional). The list of toys includes 15in alloy wheels (or 16in if you go for the Cooper S engine), heated front seats, rear parking sensors, automatic air conditioning, an 8.8in infotainment system with DAB radio, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto smartphone mirroring and auto-dimming mirrors.

If you want more oomph, the 176bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder Cooper S is a good place to start. It maintains the smooth delivery that you get with the Cooper, but cuts the 0-62mph time to a fraction under seven seconds.
